Body Aware has been designing sexy men's underwear for 30 years, and the assortment of underwear they offer is so diverse and broad that we all can find the style and fit we are seeking. I recently tried a thong myself and loved it! So much so that it got me wondering when thongs became a thing.
I was always under the impression that women were the first to enjoy this cut and style in both panties and swimsuits. After all, I grew up in the 80s and always saw this cut in many magazines and catalogs. In the early 20th century, thongs were still a niche garment worn primarily by exotic dancers and performers. It wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that the thong gained mainstream popularity, thanks in part to the fashion revolution of that era. With the rise of high-cut jeans and swimwear, traditional undergarments became visible under clothing, prompting the need for a more discreet option. The thong, with its minimalistic design, became the solution, offering a seamless and barely-there alternative that avoided visible panty lines.
The 1990s marked a pivotal moment for the thong, as it became a symbol of empowerment and self-expression. Pop culture icons like Madonna and the characters of popular TV shows embraced the thong, turning it into a fashionable and provocative statement. The lingerie industry responded to the growing demand, creating a wide array of designs, materials, and styles to cater to different tastes. From lace embellishments to bold colors, the thong transformed from a practical undergarment into a fashion staple.
Of course, historians argue that thongs were introduced in pre-historic times, and they may be correct, but do we take anything cavemen wore as a serious human advancement? Of course not.
I am genuinely pleased that this style has not only been adopted by many men (especially on this site) but has also seen tremendous growth and progress in styles, fabrics, and cuts over the years!
Every man should wear thongs when able, from satin to rip-stop to cotton to spandex/nylon blends. It is a cut you will love, especially when wearing form-fitting athletic cut dress pants or other tighter-fitting clothes. There are no panty lines and just a nice ass accentuating your clothes! Best of all, the thongs offered by Body Aware are incredibly sexy!

I’m a long time fan of thongs. A well-designed thong is attractive, very sexy and very comfortable. I love the fact that thongs have evolved with the introduction of new fabrics such as satin (very sensual), soft glow nylon, or rip-stop, and new colors and patterns. This blog traces that evolution very nicely and points out the growing acceptance and popularity of a style which I love to wear.
Could we get some new colors for satin? Red, ornage, yellow, green, pale blue, bold purple, please!!! It’s always black and the same blue over and over. No more pinks or magentas please. Also we need more satin thong styles. The Greek god thong is the only good one.
Love the deep dive into the history of thongs! I’ve recently been absolutely in love with the luxe satin mini thong. Easily the most comfortable and sexy thong I’ve ever worn. It’s been perfect for me at the gym and just as a regular day to day thong. My only riff about the satin luxe mini thong is that the fabric seems to wear down/not be as smooth as it was over time. Could just be from constant movement and natural wear and tare. With it being summer I’ve also been out and about in my black poolside swim thong. So comfortable and I love the adjustability with the draw string! Would love to see more colors for that one, possibly some yellows and mint blue again. I also would love a blog posting about wearing swim thongs in public and the stigma that comes with that. Still building my confidence with wearing swim thongs in any setting but when I do get the chance it feels so sexy and freeing! Excited to see what’s to come for BA and the blog :)
Could we get some thongs in some softer fabrics please? Perhaps micro modal, microfiber, and viscose? I would love some waistbanded thongs in those fabrics. The satin is nice but good for the gym or all day wear. Please and thank you! Keep up the great work everyone.
